Short answer: Buy a USB-C hub for travel or a single screen, and buy a docking station for a desk with dual monitors and laptop charging.
FAQ
Is a USB-C hub the same thing as a docking station?
No. A hub is a small adapter for travel or one display. A dock is a desk unit meant to charge the laptop and run a full set of ports, often two monitors, from one cable.
Can a travel USB-C hub replace a dual-monitor dock?
Usually no. Most travel hubs are built for one HDMI screen plus a couple of USB ports. For two 4K monitors, start with a dual-4K dock, not a pocket hub.
Which should I buy if I both travel and have a home desk?
Buy both roles separately: a light travel hub for the bag, and a dock that stays on the desk. Do not expect one dongle to do dual 4K and hotel-bag duty equally well.
Buy a hub for travel or one screen
A USB-C hub is the right buy when the laptop leaves the desk. You want something light, with one video output, a USB port or two, and power pass-through so the charger still reaches the laptop. It is not a substitute for a dual-monitor workstation.
Match the hub to the laptop you carry. The travel roundup splits that by brand instead of forcing one dongle on every bag: best travel USB-C hubs for hybrid work.
Buy a dock for a desk with two monitors and charging
A docking station stays on the desk. One cable should charge the laptop and bring up Ethernet, USB, and two displays. That is a different product from a pocket hub, even when both use a USB-C plug.
On this site the desk default for a Windows Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 laptop, or an Intel Mac, that can drive two displays is the CalDigit TS4. The Anker 568 is the USB4 pick aimed at Windows laptops. Read the full comparison before you buy: best Thunderbolt and USB4 docks for dual 4K. Windows-only USB4 desks are in best USB4 docks for dual 4K Windows laptops.
MacBooks are the exception that a hub-versus-dock label does not fix. A base M1 or M2 still cannot drive two native external displays from a Thunderbolt dock. Check MacBook docks (M1–M5), dual displays and caveats before you assume any dock adds a second screen. The TS4 write-up is the CalDigit TS4 review.
Recommendation
- Travel, hotel desk, or one external screen: buy a hub. Start with the travel hubs guide, not a full-size dock.
- A desk that needs two monitors plus charging: buy a dock. Start with the dual-4K docks guide. The cards above are the CalDigit TS4 and the Anker 568, both already covered there.
- You do both: keep a small hub in the bag and leave the dock at the desk.
The cable on that dock is a separate choice. A charge-only USB-C lead will not carry video. See Thunderbolt vs USB-C cable: which one you need for a dock.
