Short answer: Use a certified Thunderbolt cable on a Thunderbolt dock, a USB4 cable on a USB4 dock, and not a charge-only USB-C cable when the dock has to carry video.
FAQ
Will a charge-only USB-C cable run a dock?
No. Charge-only cables carry power and do not carry the data or video a dock needs. The laptop may charge, but displays and USB devices on the dock will not come up.
Is a USB4 cable the same as a certified Thunderbolt cable?
Not always. USB4 and Thunderbolt share the USB-C plug, but a Thunderbolt dock is meant to be used with a certified Thunderbolt cable. A USB4 cable can be the right lead for a USB4 dock.
Should I buy a Thunderbolt 5 cable instead of staying on Thunderbolt 4?
Buy Thunderbolt 5 only if the laptop already has Thunderbolt 5 ports and you need the higher charging or bandwidth. If the laptop is still Thunderbolt 4, keep a Thunderbolt 4 dock and the certified cable it uses.
Three cables that share one plug
The connector shape does not tell you what the cable can do. These are the three you will actually meet when you set up a dock.
Certified Thunderbolt cable
This is the cable to use with a Thunderbolt dock. Look for Thunderbolt certification, not just a USB-C plug. Thunderbolt 4 runs at up to 40Gbps. Passive full-speed Thunderbolt 4 cables are short; the CalDigit TS4 listing includes a 0.8m certified cable with the dock. Longer runs are a different cable (usually an active one), not a phone charger lead you already own.
Charge-only USB-C
Many laptop chargers and cheap leads are charge-only. They can power a phone or even a laptop and still carry no USB data and no video. If the dock’s screens stay black and the USB ports are dead while the laptop charges, swap in a data cable before you blame the dock.
USB4 cable
A USB4 cable is the right lead for a USB4 dock such as the Anker 568 class of Windows docks. It is not automatically a certified Thunderbolt cable. If the dock is Thunderbolt, use the Thunderbolt cable. If the dock is USB4, a USB4 cable that is rated for the dock’s video and charging is the match. The dock roundup separates those two: best Thunderbolt and USB4 docks for dual 4K.
Thunderbolt 5 cable, or stay on Thunderbolt 4
Buy a Thunderbolt 5 cable only when the laptop already has Thunderbolt 5 ports and you need the higher charging or bandwidth those ports offer. A Thunderbolt 5 cable does not turn a Thunderbolt 4 laptop into a Thunderbolt 5 laptop. If the machine is still Thunderbolt 4, stay with a Thunderbolt 4 dock and the certified cable that dock uses.
The longer version of that choice, including which docks are worth it, is is Thunderbolt 5 worth it? The card above for a Thunderbolt 5 lead is the Plugable Thunderbolt Certified cable already listed on that page (80Gbps, with a bandwidth boost, and 240W charging on the listing). The other card is the CalDigit TS4, the Thunderbolt 4 dock to keep if you are not on a Thunderbolt 5 host. Details: CalDigit TS4 review.
Recommendation
- Thunderbolt dock: use a certified Thunderbolt cable. Prefer the short cable that shipped with the dock if you still have it.
- USB4 dock: use a USB4 cable rated for that dock’s video and charging, not a charge-only lead.
- Charge-only USB-C: do not use it between the laptop and the dock.
- Thunderbolt 5: buy the TB5 cable or a TB5 dock only if the laptop already has Thunderbolt 5. Otherwise stay on Thunderbolt 4.
Hub versus a full dock is a separate decision: USB-C hub vs docking station.
